IDL Candidate advice on Dealing with a counter-offer
As a valued member of staff your employer won't want to lose you. It will be difficult for your employer to replace you with the same skills and knowledge you have. Counter offers are very common in todays ever tightening market place and it is very likely that your employer will try their hardest to keep you on board, with promises of a pay rise, bonuses, change of role and career advancement.
Be prepared for this to happen from your employer and also for them to make you feel guilty about leaving. Here are a few things to consider whilst dealing with a counter offer:
1. Why wasn't I recognised before for pay rise, bonuses and such like. 2. If they knew I was unhappy in my current role, why didn't they change it before. 3. And finally, remember the reasons you were looking to move in the first place.
Data has been collected over the years that prove over 80% of people who accept a counter offer move on within a year as the reasons for looking in the first place still remain.
If your employer has come back with a counter, before you accept, take the time to speak to your consultant to discuss the offer and your reasons for considering it. Speaking to an independent professional can help with your options.
